Housing Justice's training aims to equip volunteers and services working with homeless people with the skills and knowledge they need, especially services run by churches.

Housing Justice can provide training in:

  • Introduction to homelessness
  • Advocacy for homeless people
  • Planning and Setting up a mentoring and befriending project

Meet the Trainers 


Introduction to Homelessness Training

Housing Justice has provided this one-day training workshop since 2003. The aim of the day is to offer volunteers a basic introduction to homelessness issues through four modules:  

  • An overview of homelessness
  • Mental health awareness
  • Drugs and alcohol awareness
  • Personal safety and boundaries

Do you want to go into go into any of these areas in greater depth - or do you want follow-up training to take your volunteers to the next level?

 

We can work with you to plan a bespoke training tailored to your local context for your volunteers. Optional modules include

  • Interpersonal skills
  • Boundaries
  • Dealing with conflict
  • Housing rights and the role of the statutory and voluntary sector and churches/faith organisations

Mentoring and Befriending Consultancy 

Housing Justice have piloted and run mentoring and befriending projects working with formerly homeless clients for over two years.  We are able to offer you bespoke mentoring and befriending consultancies. An out line of what can be covered is detailed here.

 

 

Shona Macpherson worked for over two years coordinating the M&M project at Housing Justice and has since worked as a consultant to help other organisations to start their own mentoring and befriending schemes.

Advocacy Training

Housing Justice has experience in providing advocacy training to Winter Night Shelter volunteers. This training covers:  

 

  •  What is advocacy – theory and practice
  •  Basic homelessness legislation
  •  Boundaries
  •  Advocacy support: a 3 step process
  •  Advocacy in practice
