About Homelessness Sunday
Homelessness Sunday is an annual event which has been run by the Homelessness Sunday Partnership for over 15 years. It is usually held on the last Sunday in January or the first Sunday in February. Since 2008 Homelessness Sunday has been part of Poverty & Homelessness Action Week.
The next Homelessness Sunday will be 31st January 2010.
Homelessness Sunday brings together thousands of churches drawing attention to the devastating effects of homelessness.
Through prayer and reflection Homelessness Sunday offers an opportunity to listen to what God has to say about homelessness, and to consider what action we are being called to take.
Together, with faith, we can repair the hurt of homelessness and build both homes and lives.
Homelessness Sunday has the support of all the main denominations and is celebrated in a wide range of congregations.
So what happens on Homelessness Sunday?
Churches mark the day through a wide variety of activities. Some include homeless people in their prayers, some organise a weekend of activities such as sleep outs, profile raising events to highlight the problem locally and dedicated services. Others mark the day with services that link with local housing and homelessness projects and build bridges into their community. Some organise joint services with other churches in the town. Some raise funds for national and local action. All events raise the profile of homelessness in the church.
How can my church/ school/ project get involved?
Order a resource pack - To support churches each year the Housing Justice produces a Homelessness Sunday resource pack which includes worship ideas, project ideas, and material for use with children's and youth groups to enable Christians to consider the plight of those affected by homelessness in all its forms. This pack is linked with the resources available for Poverty & Homelessness Action Week.
The Homelessness Sunday resource pack provides flexible materials suitable for many different contexts making Homelessness Sunday an ideal opportunity to organise a Churches Together event. Although Homelessness Sunday is conceived as a Christian event, much of the material is suitable for use with people of other faiths or in secular contexts, especially in the context of a week of action about poverty and homelessness in the UK .
