Stubbin Neighbourhood Association was borne out of a need to have a strong legally constituted voluntary sector
organisation based in the community with negotiating powers. Residents within the area felt that they needed to take control and responsibility for the problems within the area. They began to do this by creating partnerships with the various agencies to try and resolve the problems that had an impact on people’s day-to-day lives. Since the organisation was created other volunteers with specialist skills have become involved. This has helped the company evolve and enabled the partnership to tackle some of the problems faced by the community. There is now an increased feeling of safety and community spirit.

Stubbin Estate is situated in the North of Sheffield, approximately five miles from the city centre. There are about 1000 properties, 80% of which are owned by Sheffield City Council and the rest are split between North British Housing Association and the private sector. In all there are around 3000 residents living on the estate. The community is diverse in ethnicity, age etc. The neighbourhood is statically deprived according to European Objective 1 criteria.

Until the Government bodies realised that the Stubbin Estate needed special attention on issues relating to drug/alcohol misuse; gun crime; anti-social behaviour; low education attainment etc, the area was going into rapid decline. No one wanted to live there and the fear of crime was escalating. Through the Guide Neighbourhood Programme the estate has
achieved a structure enabling the community to be involved in tackling problems and issues at a neighbourhood level. People want to fight to keep their community a better place to live.

We provide a variety of services and support for and with the local community in order to:

Develop sustainable working partnerships:

  • To help create diversionary methods for young people.
  • To look at the causes of anti-social behaviour.
  • To look at community safety partnerships.
  • To look at environmental problems.

Develop realistic workable action plans with the partnership:

  • To looking at putting community action plans in place with different agencies to deliver a number of initiatives.
  • To look at resources already available within the community that are not being accessed.
  • To look at how the agencies can best work together to deliver a quality service.

Develop mechanisms to involve volunteers in the planning process:

  • To involve more volunteers in community activities
  • To make training available for volunteers to get involved in projects
  • To help volunteers be made aware of the legal aspects of running a project
  • To help volunteers set up their own initiatives.

We have already developed an excellent working relationship with the following groups:-

  • Batemoor New Tenants and Residents Association
  • Wisewood EMB.
  • Wisewood and District Tenants and Residents Association
  • Brushes Tenants & Residents Association
