Burrowes Street is a Tenant Management Organisation 5 mins walk from Walsall town centre and approximately 10 miles from Birmingham.

In the early 1990s we employed a Section 16 training agent to take us through the necessary training process and in 1994we signed a Management Agreement with Walsall MBC to become the first TMO in Walsall.

Our aim was to take over responsibility for housing service on the estate, including repairs, lettings, rent arrears and environment. At the same time we wanted to build a community.

Burrowes Street manages 312 properties. 24 low rise flats, 270 multi-storey flats and 18 bed sits in a sheltered housing scheme. We have two more management agreements with local Housing Associations, managing 18 one bed flats for Caldmore HA and 11 three bed houses for Accord HA.

Our partnership work includes the local police, working closely to eradicate anti-social behaviour, drugs and prostitution.

We now have a very low crime rate. We work with the Local Agenda 21, Local Committee, Local councillors and Walsall MBC to provide our tenants and our neighbourhood with the best service possible. We also work with local schools.

We can receive visits of large or small groups, or we can visit them working short or long term as required. We will meet with key workers to give advice and support and are always ready to offer telephone, postal or e-mail advice.

We have worked with several local groups helping them develop committee skills, and in other management areas. We work closely with Walsall Tenant and Residents Federation and were instrumental in setting up WATMOS Community Homes, a registered Social Landlord, controlled entirely by tenants for tenants. We also work closely with the National
Federation of TMOs.

Burrowes St secured funding under the Guide Neighbourhood program to use the model of good practice in neighbourhood management to inspire others, and to extend its training, advisory and monitoring services across the country. To encourage local people to participate effectively in their own area and to advise and assist public sector officers to communicate effectively in community engagements.

We aim to build on our past experiences to continue this work.
